We have ignition!

After failing to turn up yesterday, and ringing me at 6pm to tell me they weren't going to turn up at all, they've *finally* turned up this morning. And mended my boiler! Whoohoo! I have central heating again finally, and boy is it a relief.

It appears the one of the powered valves that governs whether hot water flows into the radiators had siezed, and if that valve doesn't open, the central heating pump and boiler don't get turned on either, which is why it's all been sat there doing nothing. Not something I would have worked out for myself, so I don't feel too incompetent for not having been able to diagnose it :)

Everything appears to be warming up, so all I need to do now is bleed the radiators when I get home from work and it should all be good.

Ah, soft, your generation is. When I was a girl (when I was still quite young, anyway), we didn't have none of this here newfangled central heating. Nor double-glazing, neither. We'd wake up on a winter morning to windows opaque with frost patterns (pretty, those were, I miss them) and wash in near-freezing water in a chilly bathroom before returning, shivering, to the equally cold bedroom to dress; being careful not to step off the bedside rug with bare feet, because the rest of the bedroom floor was covered in lino (like ice, that was). Then we'd rush downstairs to huddle over the fire my father would just have lit for the day, inhaling smoke while we tried to get a bit of warmth out of a heap of coals that was only just beginning to catch. Those were the days!

Oh yes, that sounds wonderful. So next time I'm home, shall I disconnect the boiler so we can all enjoy those happy days again? :)

*hugs his now working central heating, like the softie he is*
